Lead-Hazard Risk Assessment

Innovative Environmental Consultants offers on-site investigation for lead-based paint hazards. This includes an assessment of the building's history, a visual assessment with limited environmental samplings, such as XRF analysis, dust wipes, soil samples, and deteriorating paint samples. Risk assessments determine the sources of lead in a dwelling and detail the possible means of correcting any identified hazards.

If a lead hazard is identified, Innovative Environmental Consultants will present a variety of options to reduce the hazard along with estimated costs and ongoing maintenance schedules. A report is prepared outlining the findings, determinations and recommendations.

Children are most at risk from lead poisoning, especially if they live where exposure to lead dust exists. Swallowing or breathing lead dust causes lead poisoning. The lead hazard can be found in peeling paint or fine lead dust. Even small amounts of chipped lead paint or lead dust can be dangerous to children because their bodies are still developing and absorb lead more easily than adult bodies do. Plus children's propensity to putting things into their mouths may increase their exposure.

An assessment determines the source of lead poisoning. Lead may be coming into a home from other sources than just paint. It may be coming from a job site on an adult's clothing or from a hobby, such as glasswork that produces lead and creates a lead hazard. Agencies using federal funds to rehabilitate low-income housing may require a risk assessment to assure lead-based paint does not pose a hazard to young children.

An individual licensed through the Environmental Protection Agency and certified to perform risk assessments must conduct lead-based paint risk assessments. Innovative Environmental Consultants holds this licensure and certification to work on Region VIII tribal lands and in the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Minnesota.

Our trained and certified staff also conducts: educational presentations, and provide project design, project management, consulting and technical assistance, lead-hazard inspections, risk assessments, clearance testing, and program development.
