A lead-hazard inspection should be done whenever a project will disturb painted surfaces in a home or apartment that was built before 1978. An inspection will also be required when a child is diagnosed with an elevated blood-lead level. Inspections do not identify hazards, measure exposure or suggest solutions. Inspections do allow the owner to avoid treating paint that is not lead based. An inspection of all painted surfaces will determine if lead-based paint is present.
